HUNGER IN AMERICA IS CHANGING
The economy may be improving, but the recovery is still leaving many of Americans who were hit the hardest behind. Millions of people are still struggling to get by because of underemployment, stagnant wages and rising costs of living. In fact, millions of people still turn to agencies and programs each year for extra support.
It is estimated that the number of children who need food services from Broward County will increase during the next five years. Broward County is growing and a number of new families are entering the area to look for employment. The Caring Hands of Deerfield Food Pantry is an important resource to these families because we can respond quickly with one of the most important resources these families need. Food!
WHO GOES HUNGRY?
Hunger can affect people from all walks of life. Many Americans are one job loss or medical crisis away from food insecurity – but some people, including children and seniors, may be at greater risk of hunger than others.
42.2 million Americans live in food insecure households, including 29.1 million adults and 13.1 million children. 13 percent of households (15.8 million households) were food insecure. 5 percent of households (6.3 million households) experienced very low food security. Approximately 295,482 people receive government help for food in Broward County alone.

The Caring Hands of Deerfield Pantry provides food to families and individuals in need in Broward County. Our goal is to alleviate hunger in Broward County by soliciting, collecting, and packaging food for distribution through a network of service agencies and programs that serve our target population groups. Our services include emergency food programs and common care products when available. The Caring Hands of Deerfield Pantry receives support from the local churches, charitable organizations and corporate sponsorship.
Our mission is to assist and provide supplement food and personal care items to the needy in the surrounding communities of the area, who have been impacted by financial problems as a result of unemployment, underemployment, homelessness and disaster. The food guidelines are as follows: One-time emergency, must have a legal photo ID and must have ID for every adult person receiving food, must have proof of residence, and if any children are involved you must have copy of everyone’s birth certificate or insurance card.
Our client base is low-income people, mainly families, who need emergency help to put food on the table. Nearly half of those served by the program are children. The Caring Hands of Deerfield Pantry operates out of a local church where we store donated or rescued food for distribution. The program actively solicits food from local churches, and retailers. In addition, The Caring Hands of Deerfield Pantry collects food donations from restaurants for immediate distribution to service programs. Our services improve the ability of families to care for children and achieve goals of self-sufficiency.
